Diego Simeone created a three-man shortlist when asked who he would choose as his successor at Atletico Madrid.

The 53-year-old Argentine, who succeeded Gregorio Manzano at Los Colchoneros in the winter of 2011, has led Atletico to two La Liga titles and two Europa League successes.

In fact, Simeone has lifted eight trophies in Madrid, which is more than any other manager in the Spanish club's history.

The former Lazio and Inter Milan midfielder is the longest-serving manager in La Liga at present, but he continues to be tipped for jobs elsewhere.

So who does Simeone think should take over when he does decide to leave the Wanda Metropolitano? Speaking to radio station Cadena SER this week, he was asked who he would choose as his successor.

“One of the best," he said. "Klopp, Ancelotti, Pochettino are the coaches that I would like to be at Atletico.”

Back in 2021, after Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 at the Metropolitano, Simeone refrained from shaking hands with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, and instead darted down the tunnel.

But it appears the Argentine has a huge amount of admiration for Klopp when it comes to his coaching ability.

In the interview, Simeone touched on his relationship with Real Madrid manager Ancelotti, saying: "It is very good. I’m not friends with him, but we have a good relation. Respect, that’s the word.”

When asked which players he would have liked to have managed, Simeone added: "Messi, Ronaldo… the best, just like everyone else. I don’t think there’s much debate there.”

In terms of Simeone's future, the Argentine received a lucrative offer to join Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli last summer but he was content in Madrid.

In fact, after being tipped to join the Premier League this year, Simeone signed a three-year contract extension at Atletico, meaning he will remain at the La Liga club until 30 June 2027.
